Thumb Sucking – When Should They Stop?
Sucking is a natural reflex and provides comfort and security to young children. However, this seemingly innocent habit can significantly affect the alignment of your child’s teeth, as well as interfere with the jaws normal growth pattern and thereby affect their general well-being.
The age of your child, the intensity and duration of thumb sucking, as well as the condition of their mouth; will all influence the probability of dental problems. Thumb sucking typically exerts pressure upward on the palate and outward on the upper front teeth. Research indicates that thumb sucking beyond age two, increases the likelihood of your child developing protruding front teeth called overjet or even a crossbite. Generally when children reach the age of two, they stop sucking their thumb. However, if this has not occurred by this age; it is important to take steps toward eliminating this habit.
